Considered a feminist classic, The Sealed Soil was made without official permission in 1977 and smuggled out of the country. Although it won several international awards, director Marva Nabili was forced into exile due to the political situation in Iran.

The film tells the story of a young village woman caught between the contradictory pressures of a society in transformation, where the traditional and ancient life of a village is giving way to the urban and industrial life of pre-revolution Iran. She is ostracised by her family for rejecting multiple offers of marriage at the age of 18, but the more pressure they put on her, the more rebellious she becomes.

The screening copy is the director's personal 16mm print. CineIran Festival is proud to present the film at our free screening, followed by a conversation with the director.
